Institute of Acoustics

The Institute of Acoustics (IOA) is the British society for engineers and scientists in the field of acoustics .

It emerged in 1974 from the merger of the Society of Acoustic Technology, founded in 1963 (British Acoustic Society from 1965) and the acoustics group of the Institute of Physics . They have around 3000 members (2016).

There are subgroups for room acoustics, electroacoustics, environmental noise, measuring instruments, musical acoustics, physical acoustics, speech and hearing, underwater acoustics and vibration and noise engineering.

They award various prizes including the Rayleigh Medal , the Tyndall Medal, and the AB Wood Medal.

It is based in St Albans .
