The gymnastics memorial near the Palatinate country town of Deidesheim is a memorial for the gymnasts of the Turngau Rhein-Limburg, which belongs to the Palatinate Gymnastics Federation , who fell in World War I. It is a listed building.

location

The gymnastics memorial is located about a kilometer west of Deidesheim just below the summit of the Waldberg , a mountain of the Haardt . A little below the gymnastics monument there is a sports area and a restaurant. A memorial stone was placed halfway between the sports field and the gymnastics memorial.

history

The idea of erecting the monument was first discussed at the Gauturntag on February 8, 1925, which took place in Deidesheim. In addition to the monument itself, a sports field was also to be built so that a mountain gymnastics festival could be held there every year . The site for the construction was provided by the city of Deidesheim. Work on the sports field began in January 1926 and was inaugurated on June 6 of the same year. The foundation stone for the monument was laid on the same day. There were 52 submissions to the tender among architects. A decision was made in favor of the “Stolze Mourning” design by architects Georg Hoch ( Neuhofen ) and Philipp Blaumer ( Ludwigshafen am Rhein ).

On October 3, 1927, a gymnastics festival was held in honor of the 80th birthday of President Paul von Hindenburg ; the gymnastics memorial was still under construction at the time. On June 2 and 3, 1928, the gymnastics memorial was finally inaugurated. Initially it was dedicated to the 1,018 fallen soldiers of the Turngau Rhein-Limburg who lost their lives in World War I. Today a memorial stone, which was erected a few meters away in 1957, also commemorates the gymnasts who died in World War II.

Every year on Ascension Day , a mountain gymnastics festival of the Turngau Rhine-Limburg takes place at the gymnastics memorial, in 2019 for the 92nd time.

description

Altar-like table with a steel helmet

The shape of the gymnastics memorial is reminiscent of a round temple that is open at the top. It is a tower-like quarry stone building with elongated, narrow arcades . The monument stands on a four-tiered pedestal, in the middle is a round "altar" on which a steel helmet decorated with oak leaves lies. The round table bears the inscription

HIS GIRL BROTHERS FALLEN IN THE WORLD WAR 1914-18 RHEIN-LIMBRUG GAU DER DT

On the memorial stone a few meters away, the dead of World War II is commemorated with the inscription
