Turngau

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Turngau is one of several regional subdivisions of a regional gymnastics association. In earlier times there were also gymnastics circles, which are hardly in use today, whose subdivisions have been referred to as Turngaue.

term

The term Turngau is a word creation from the terms Turnen and Gau , whereby both the meaning of the term Gau as a regional administrative unit and the factual assignment to gymnastics is expressed.

The term is used in both Germany and Austria , but not in Switzerland . The subdivisions of the Swiss Gymnastics Federation (STV) are based on the cantons . District gymnastics associations there are equivalent for German and Austrian gymnastics districts.

history

As early as the middle of the 19th century, efforts to found gymnastics districts were mostly made by gymnastics clubs, gymnastics societies or gymnastics communities in order to be able to articulate themselves in unison and to form a common interest group on a local level.

The formation or founding of a gymnasium was an advantage in relation to the local administration, other local interest groups, at regional events and also in relation to sports associations at the same and higher level.

A Turngau, however, also takes on tasks of communication and regional organization and administration for the member clubs. Turngaue offer courses for trainers, organize Gau championships, Gau children's gymnastics festivals and other competitions, sometimes also mountain gymnastics festivals . Like almost all associations, the Turngaue are also constituted or organized as registered associations.
