Instituto Nacional de Migración

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM, National Immigration Service) is Mexico's immigration agency . The institute was founded in 1993 by a decree of the President Carlos Salinas de Gortari and today has 32 regional offices. From December 7, 2006 to September 14, 2010, Cecilia Romero was the leader.

Human rights organizations such as Amnesty International and Doctors Without Borders describe the agency as a crumbling institution, infiltrated by organized crime , promoting illegality and corruption, and tolerating abuses by officials and criminals. In the case of “random checks”, those affected would be exposed to so-called racial profiling : Mexicans with dark skin and Maya features would be mistaken for citizens of Central American states further south. The Catholic priest Alejandro Solalinde is also among the critics .
