The Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto , abbreviated IVDP , in German Douro and Port Wine Institute , is an institute in Portugal that regulates, controls and regulates the cultivation, processing and trade of wine from the Douro region , in particular port wine promotes.

The IVDP is originally a private sector interest group for the region's winegrowers and wine traders, promotes advertising and information, and promotes tourism in the region and international trade. However, the institute is endowed by the Portuguese Ministry of Finance and Agriculture with extensive competencies for the performance of public tasks, in particular the establishment and monitoring of regulations.

The institute has its headquarters in the wine-growing region in Peso da Régua and a branch in Porto , where most of the wineries and traders are located.

history

The old IVP building in Porto

Until 2003 the IVDP was known only as Instituto do Vinho do Porto (IVP, German: Port Wine Institute ). This year, the Comissão Interprofissional da Região Demarcada do Douro (CIRDD, German: Interprofessional Commission for the Douro Demarcation Region), which generally oversees the production and trade in wine from the Douro region, was integrated into the IVP and the name was renamed Part of the "Douro" expanded.

The Port Wine Institute was founded in 1933 on the initiative of the Casa do Douro (Society of Winegrowers) and the Grémio dos Exportadores do Vinho do Porto (Committee of Port Wine Exporters ) to act as a joint control body and interest group for all port wine.

However, the origins are much earlier. The IVDP traces its history back to the Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro (German: General Society for Viticulture of the Upper Douro), which was founded in 1756 by the Marquês de Pombal .

seal of quality

The IVDP guarantee seal, which is attached to the bottle neck of every real port wine

The institute is best known to the consumer for the paper seal on the bottle neck of every "real" port wine (see picture). This seal certifies the origin from the region and the production according to the regulations of the IVDP. The seal says nothing about the exact quality of the port, because every real port carries it. Only a minimum quality is ensured.

The letter and number code on the seal is of no significance for the consumer. The IVDP can use this number to determine the manufacturer and the approximate year of bottling, but not the type, age or quality of the wine.
