Insular cases
Several decisions of the US Supreme Court from the early 20th century are summarized under the title Insular Cases . The cases focused mainly on a central theme of the presidential election in 1900 and the American Anti-Imperialist League , which comes in the following question to the expression: "Follow the Constitution of the flag ("? Does the Constitution follow the flag ")?". The Supreme Court ruled that the full rights of the Constitution cannot automatically be extended to all areas under American control.
In 1898 the USA annexed Hawaii . In the same year, the Peace of Paris ended the Spanish-American War , after which the United States came into possession of Cuba , Puerto Rico , Guam and the Philippines . At that time there was a debate about government in these new territories as there were no rules in the constitution on the subject. With the insular cases , the Supreme Court provided the framework for the application of the version on these islands.
