history

The United States Reports are based on the Reports of cases ruled and adjudged in the courts of Pennsylvania, before and since the Revolution by Alexander J. Dallas , published in 1790 . This first of a total of four volumes of the so-called Dallas Reports (1790–1800) deals with cases that were decided by courts in Pennsylvania in the years before and after the Declaration of Independence . Cases of the Supreme Court, founded in 1789, were not published until the second volume.

From 1801 to 1815, William Cranch compiled the court's decisions in a nine-volume collection. In 1816 the US Congress created the office of Reporter of Decisions ; In this function, further collections were published by the incumbent until 1874.

It was not until 1874 that Congress finally made funds available for the publication of an official collection of decisions. The aforementioned publications were counted as the first volumes of the United States Reports - including the first volume of the Dallas Reports , although it did not contain any Supreme Court rulings.

Volume 544 was published in February 2008 and contains decisions from 2004/2005.

How to quote

Supreme Court rulings are commonly cited in the United States Reports with reference to the reference . According to the rules set out in the Bluebook , the decision on the Jane Roe, et al. v. For example, Henry Wade, District Attorney of Dallas County as

Roe v. Wade, 410 US 113 (1973)

to quote. The decision dates back to 1973 and was published in Volume 410 of the United States Reports on page 113 ff.

In the volumes of the United States Reports up to 1874, their original names are also noted. So the case of William Marbury v. James Madison, Secretary of State of the United States, featured in the first volume of Cranch's set of decisions, which became the fifth volume of the United States Reports ; the judgment is therefore also quoted as follows:

Marbury v. Madison, 5 US (1 Cranch) 137 (1803)

In the case of new decisions, the court will indicate in the judgment in which volume of the United States Reports they will be published later. Since the page number is not fixed, a placeholder is used. For example, the ruling on the Ralph Baze and Thomas C. Bowling v. John D. Rees originally headed:

Baze v. Rees, 553 US___ (2008)
