Intelsat 36 is a commercial communications satellite owned by the International Telecommunications Satellite Consortium ( Intelsat ) based in Luxembourg .
It was launched into geostationary orbit on August 24, 2016 at 10:17 pm UTC with an Ariane 5 ECA launcher from the Center Spatial Guyanais rocket launch site (together with Intelsat 33e ) . With a total payload of 10,735 kg (including payload adapter), this is the heaviest payload that an Ariane 5 rocket has ever launched into space.
The three-axis stabilized satellite is equipped with 34 Ku-band - and 10 C-band - transponders and is to be used from the position 68.5 ° East to the south of Africa and parts of the Indian Ocean in the Ku-band with satellite television (MultiChoice) and Africa, the provide communications services to the Indian Ocean and South Asia in the C-band. The satellite was built on the basis of the SSL 1300 satellite bus from Space Systems / Loral and has a planned service life of more than 15 years.
