Intelsat 20 is a commercial communications satellite owned by the satellite operator Intelsat . It replaced its predecessors Intelsat 7 and Intelsat 10 in September 2012 .

It was August 2, 2012 at 20:54 UTC with an Ariane-5 - rocket from the Kourou launch site (along with HYLAS 2 ) into a geostationary transfer orbit brought. After separating from the rocket 28 minutes after launch, the satellite reached its geostationary end position on its own . It was the fiftieth successful launch of an Ariane 5 rocket in series, which also set a new load record with the transport of a payload of 10.2 tons in a geostationary transfer orbit (GTO).

The three-axis stabilized satellite with 60 Ku-band -, 24 C-band - and a Ka-band - transponders equipped and supplied from the position 68.5 ° East from Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Russia and Asia with telecommunications services (video , Voice and broadband applications). It was built on the basis of the SL1300 satellite bus from Space Systems / Loral and has a planned service life of 24 years.
