HYLAS 2 (Highly Adaptable Satellite 2) is a commercial communications satellite from Avanti Communications from Great Britain. It is the company's second satellite after HYLAS launched in November 2010.
It was brought into a geostationary transfer orbit on August 2, 2012 at 20:54 UTC with an Ariane 5 launcher from the Kourou rocket launch site (together with Intelsat 20 ). After separation from the rocket 34 minutes after the launch, the satellite reached its geostationary end position with its own propulsion. It was the fiftieth successful launch of an Ariane 5 rocket in series, which also set a new load record with the transport of a payload of 10.2 tons in a geostationary transfer orbit (GTO).
The three-axis stabilized satellite with 24 Ka-band -Endnutzer- and six Gateway - transponders and two extendable reflector antennas with six faces, and a pivotable Nadir equipped antenna. It is to provide data communication services (broadband Internet for companies and video transmissions) from the 33.5 ° West position in Europe, the Middle East and the East and South of Africa. It was built on the basis of the STAR-2.4E satellite bus from Orbital Sciences Corporation and has a planned service life of 15 years.
The launch of Hylas 3 took place in August 2019 as a guest payload on the satellite EDRS-C . The HYLAS 4 satellite was launched in April 2018.
