List of geostationary satellites |
The satellites of the Intelsat IVA and Intelsat 4A series are television satellites of the International Telecommunications Satellite Consortium ( Intelsat ) based in Luxembourg . They were developed and built by the Hughes Aircraft Company based on the Intelsat IV series .
Intelsat IVA F-1
The first of six satellites was launched on September 26, 1975 with an Atlas SLV-3D Centaur-D1AR rocket from Cape Canaveral , Florida . The intended service life was seven years. The spin-stabilized satellites had a cylindrical shape, 2.38 m in diameter and 2.8 m in length, which were equipped on the outside with 17,000 solar cells for the energy supply. With the antennas that did not turn, they were about 7 m high and could transmit two television transmissions or 7250 telephone calls at the same time through the 20 transponders (16 spot and 4 wide-angle). Thanks to the improved antennas compared to the Intelsat IV generation and 20 instead of 12 transponders, the transmission capacity has almost been doubled.
Intelsat IVA F-5 and F-6
Of the six satellites, the fourth (with the designation F-5) was lost due to a leak in the engine's gas generator during take-off. The sixth satellite weighed 826 kg when launched, only about half the mass of the other satellites.
