InterGen is a private American power plant operator .

The company was founded in 1995 when the J. Makowski Company was taken over by Bechtel and Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E). 1997 Shell Trading took over the share of PG&E, which triggered a strong growth phase. In 2005, InterGen was sold to the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan and AIG Highstar. In 2008 AIG Highstar sold its 50% stake to the Indian GMR Group .

In 2011, the China Huaneng Group and the Guangdong Yudean Group acquired GMR's stake.
