Interdisciplinary center for ethics at the European University Viadrina

The Interdisciplinary Center for Ethics (IZE) is an interdisciplinary and internationally oriented research institution. It was founded in 1995 at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) as a joint project of the faculties represented there (law, cultural studies and economics).

The IZE has set itself the goal of promoting an understanding of ethics issues in research and teaching by organizing symposia, workshops and lectures, awarding doctoral topics, supporting relevant research activities and cooperating with other ethics centers in Germany and abroad deepen. In its work, the IZE deals in particular with fundamental questions of ethics in modern sciences as well as with the interfaces between the different areas of science. Further emphases are in the areas of legal ethics and legal philosophy, business ethics and the history of ethics.

In addition to intensive cooperation with the Collegium Polonicum , a joint institution of the European University Viadrina and the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan , in the neighboring Polish town of Słubice , the IZE cooperates with universities and institutes etc. a. in Australia, Estonia, Great Britain, Israel, Italy, Japan, Canada, Latvia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Russia, Spain, South Africa, the Czech Republic, Hungary and the USA.

Jan C. Joerden as managing director , Uwe Scheffler as a representative of the law faculty, Ulrich Knefelkamp as a representative of the cultural science faculty, and Hermann Ribhegge as a representative of the economic science faculty sit on the executive committee of the IZE . The IZE project partners include a. the Academy for Ethics in Medicine eV (AEM) in Göttingen, the International Association for Legal Philosophy (IVR) German Section in Heidelberg, the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) in Bielefeld, the Institute for German, European and International Medical Law, Health Law and Bioethics from the Universities of Heidelberg and Mannheim (IMGB) , as well as the Collegium Polonicum in Słubice.
