Jan C. Joerden

Jan C. Joerden (born April 28, 1953 in Essen ) is a German law scholar and professor at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) .

Life

After graduating from high school in Hamburg-Volksdorf , Joerden studied law at the University of Hamburg from the 1972 summer semester , where he completed his studies in 1978 with the first state examination in law. This was followed by his legal clerkship at the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court in Hamburg , which he completed in 1981 with the second state examination. He then worked as an academic advisor at the Chair of Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure Law and Legal Philosophy at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . There he received his doctorate in 1985 at Joachim Hruschka Dr. iur. This was followed in 1987 with the habilitation, with which Joerden the venia legendi for the subjects of criminal law, legal philosophy and legal logic. This work was awarded the Konrad Hellwig Prize of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.

After being promoted to senior academic council, Joerden held a chair at the Free University of Berlin in the 1989 summer semester . This was followed by a substitute professorship at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, before he again took up a professorship in Berlin in the 1990/91 winter semester. After a visiting professorship at the University of Jena , he was appointed as an adjunct professor in 1992 by the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. After another substitute chair at the University of Trier , he was appointed by the University of Frankfurt (Oder) to the chair of criminal law, in particular international criminal law and comparative criminal law, legal philosophy, which he initially represented and has held since his appointment as university professor in 1994 until today. From 1994 to 1998 he was also Vice Rector for Structure, Planning and Finance at the University of Frankfurt (Oder). He declined calls to the Universities of Rostock (1997) and Augsburg (2001).

Joerden was visiting professor at the University of the Western Cape and is adjunct professor at Özyeğin University in Istanbul . He is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Interdisciplinary Center "Medicine - Ethics - Law" at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg . In February 2015, he was from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan , the honorary doctorate awarded.

According to his venia, Joerden's publications concentrate on the field of criminal law and legal philosophy and their interfaces, such as medical law in particular. He also acts as co-editor of the yearbook for law and ethics , the studies on ethics in East Central Europe and various German-Polish research projects.
