International Council for Archeozoology

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Council for Archeozoology (ICAZ) is a non-profit organization that has set itself the goal of promoting international archaeozoological research and promoting communication between scientists in this subject. The ICAZ has more than 500 members in 50 states. The most important means of promoting communication are the conferences, with the organization holding an international conference every four years (previously 12), so-called International Committee Meetings every two years . In addition, an issue of the ICAZ newsletter appears in spring and autumn .

Since archeozoology covers an enormous spectrum, temporary and permanent working groups were set up. Currently (as of 2017) there are 16 of these working groups, which in turn hold their own conferences.

history

The ICAZ goes back to the conference Domestication Research and the History of Pets , which took place in Budapest in 1971 . It is considered the first ICAZ International Conference , the second conference of its kind took place in Groningen in 1974 . During this conference, a first draft of the statutes was completed.

The first meeting of the International Committee, at that time still a more informal meeting of organizers of international conferences, took place in September 1976 during the 9th Congress of the Union Internationale des Sciences Préhistoriques et Protohistoriques in Nice , at which a set of statutes was promulgated . In 1990 the Washington, DC conference discussed the extent to which an organization with members should not be preferred. Therefore new statutes were drawn up in Cambridge in 1995 . They were adopted by the International Committee in August 1997 after a few revisions and expanded in 2002 by a vote of the members. The committee has now been elected by the members. It was recognized as a non-profit organization in the USA in 2014. Today there are two committees, namely the Executive Committee and the International Committee . The latter consists of the members of the Executive Committee and 35 academics elected by the members.
