International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics

The International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) is an international scientific society whose members are mathematical societies from all over the world. There are currently 21 full members, mostly national or supra-regional associations for applied mathematics , and 26 associated members. In Germany, the Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM) is a full member and the German Mathematicians Association (DMV) is an associated member.

The aims of the ICIAM are the promotion of industrial and applied mathematics on an international level and the networking of the members. To implement these goals, the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (also abbreviated as ICIAM) is organized every four years . B. ICIAM 2019 in Valencia .

history

The ICIAM was founded in the 1980s under the name Committee for International Conferences on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CICIAM) and organized the first congress in 1987 in Paris . The name ICIAM has been used since 1999. Also in 1999 the five ICIAM prizes were awarded for the first time.

The following congresses took place in Washington DC (1991), Hamburg (1995), Edinburgh (1999), Sydney (2003), Zurich (2007), Vancouver (2011), Beijing (2015) and Valencia (2019). The next congress will take place in Tokyo in August 2023.

organization

The business is managed by a board of six. The current (as of November 2019) President is Ya-xiang Yuan , General Secretary is Sven Leyffer and Treasurer is Heike Faßbender from Braunschweig.

ICIAM prices

The ICIAM awards five international science prizes every four years. The winners will be announced in September of the year prior to the ICIAM meeting and the award ceremony will take place at the opening event of the ICIAM meeting.

  • Collatz Prize for researchers under 42 years of age
  • Lagrange Prize for individuals with outstanding lifetime achievement
  • Maxwell Prize for researchers with a high level of originality
  • Poineer Prize for pioneering work in translating mathematics into industrial research
  • Su Buchin Prize for outstanding mathematical contributions to the development of society
