International Launch Services ( ILS ) is an American - Russian joint venture that markets the Proton and Angara launch vehicles worldwide. International Launch Services has been the main owner of Roskosmos since April 2019 .

history

ILS was founded in 1995 as a private space company by Lockheed Martin , GKNPZ Khrunichev and RKK Energija for the commercial marketing of the American Atlas V and the Russian Proton.

With the launch of Astra 1F on April 9, 1996, the first satellite was successfully brought into orbit under the leadership of ILS.

In September 2006 Lockheed Martin announced that it would sell its shares in ILS. On October 11, 2006, Lockheed Martin's shares in ILS were finally sold to Space Transport Inc. At this point in time, ILS had already completed 37 successful commercial Proton launches. With the withdrawal of Lockheed Martin, the marketing of the Atlas V was also transferred to Lockheed Martin Commercial Launch Services.

In May 2008, Khrunichev Research and Production Space Center finally took over all shares in Space Transport Inc.

On October 14, 2014 ILS celebrated the 75th Proton launch since the company was founded.

The first launch of the Russian new development Angara 1.2 took place in 2014 and has been marketed by ILS since 2017. In contrast to the Proton, the Angara does not start from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan , but from Plesetsk in northern Russia. In the future, it will also start from the Wostochny Cosmodrome when new launch facilities have been built there.
