The International Opera Awards was founded in 2013 by Harry Hyman, a British businessman and opera conveyor and John Allison, editor of the magazine Opera , donated.

Goal, grants and celebrations

The aim of the event is to promote outstanding opera performances as well as international opera. While there are a number of individual prizes awarded to opera productions and opera singers at other broader artistic awards ceremonies, there is no dedicated award event for the opera itself.

Scholarships are awarded to aspiring artists from the opera field. The Opera Awards Foundation was established to support emerging talent in the opera world. A fixed percentage of the prize money goes to this foundation. There are 20 different categories of awards for which artists can be nominated and there is a shortlist of finalists that will be announced prior to the awards ceremony.

The closing ceremony of the first International Opera Awards took place on Monday April 22, 2013 in London at the Hilton Hotel.
