The International Republican Institute ( IRI , "International Republican Institute") is a US institution that runs programs to promote democracy in developing countries . It was founded in 1983 and is located in Washington, DC Its funding it receives in part directly from the US government through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (State Department), implicitly in part by the government-affiliated National Endowment for Democracy (NED). The IRI is close to the Republican Party of the USA, but pursues a non-partisan approach, so, unlike the German party-affiliated foundations, it works in every country with several parties and not just with those from its own party family. Senator Dan Sullivan chairs the IRI's Board of Directors . From 1993 to 2008, John McCain was the chairman. The democratic counterpart of the IRI is the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI).
