International Shark Attack File

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Shark Attack File (ISAF) is a worldwide database of shark attacks. The database is due to an attempt to categorize and investigate shark attacks on U.S. Marines during World War II. It was accordingly financially supported by the US Office of Naval Research from 1958 to 1968. During this time, a panel of shark experts developed a standardized record of shark attacks that occurred around the world.

The database was maintained for a time by the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota , Florida until the database was transferred to the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida .

The database contains entries on more than 6000 shark attacks and often contains detailed, only limited publicly accessible information about the process as well as photographs of the victims, progress charts and autopsy reports . The database is only accessible to scientists after an entrance examination.
