The International Association for Scientific Studies of Population Development (IUSSP) is an international non-profit organization that conducts research on the issues of global and territorial anthropogenic population dynamics . To do this, it uses modern communication technology, organizes regional and international workshops, seminars and conferences and organizes the IUSSP's International Population Conferences (IPC) , which has been held every four years since 1965.

history

After a conference of international scientists researching population development in Geneva in 1927 , the desire arose to create a permanent international organization representing their interests. The driving force was the American women's rights activist Margaret Sanger , who organized the first meeting in Paris in 1928 and at which the organization was officially constituted by 35 representatives from 12 different countries. It was decided that national committees should be established and jointly pursue scientific exchange. By the next General Assembly in London in 1931 , 14 national committees had been founded, but at the following conferences, in Berlin in 1935 and Paris in 1937, it became increasingly clear that the different interests and activities of the national societies differed too much to reach binding joint decisions.

Interrupted by World War II , the first post-war Congress was held in Washington, DC in 1947 . At this meeting with 147 participants from 32 countries it was decided to create an administration with a standing committee and an office in order to put an end to the national divergences of the 1930s. In addition, it was agreed that the Union should be more active and efficiency should be increased. In this context, three committees were created at the same time, which were to devote themselves to the essential points of population development. First, a committee that was supposed to find answers to questions about the population and nutrition , second, a committee about fertility and sterility and, third, a committee to compile statistics in the context of underdeveloped countries .

Tasks and purpose

The IUSSP has set itself the goal of scientifically covering population developments, promoting the global transfer of knowledge among researchers, and awakening a general interest in population issues. To this end, she organizes

  • Seminars and workshops to promote scientific knowledge;
  • Training and distance learning activities to provide a solid foundation for continuing education;
  • the International General Assembly every four years;
  • publishes the results of scientific activities in a variety of publications aimed at an academic audience, policy makers and / or the general public;
  • It maintains a website to facilitate collaboration in a variety of ways for its members and to provide population information to a general audience.
