Italy ( pronunciation: / ˈɪtli / ) is a city with Town status in Ellis County in the state of Texas in the United States . At the last census in 2010 , Italy had 1,863 inhabitants; in 2018 the population was estimated at 1,858.
location
Italy is located at the intersection of US Route 77 and Texas State Highway 34 , around 22 kilometers south of Waxahachie and 30 kilometers northeast of Hillsboro . The Interstate Highway 35E runs just west of Italy . Neighboring towns and cities are Forreston in the north, Nash in the northeast, Avalon in the east, Lone Cedar in the southeast, Mertens in the south, Milford in the southwest and Bell Branch in the northwest.
history
The first building in what is now the city was built in 1879 by the Aycock brothers and served as a residential building, general store and post office. Originally the place should get the name Houston Creek after Sam Houston . However, in order to avoid confusion with other cities with similar names, the then head of the post office of Waxahachie, Gabriel J. Penn, suggested the name Italy in 1880 , because the local weather reminded him of that in Italy. In 1890 the settlement had almost 400 inhabitants who lived from agriculture and grew wheat and cotton .
In December 1890, the construction of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad reached the village. The following year, Italy was incorporated as a city. In 1894 there were several schools in Italy with a total of 350 pupils. In 1900 there were six churches in the city. A year later the International Great Northern Railroad reached Italy. In 1913 the first Interurbans drove to the greater Dallas area and to Waco . In March 1925, the Italy Independent School District was established. In the 1920s, Italy's economy was still heavily influenced by the cotton industry, with five egrenizing machines and a cottonseed oil mill . The city's population rose steadily in the first half of the 20th century, from 1,061 in 1900 to around 1,500 in 1925; thereafter, however, as a result of the Great Depression , the population emigrated. In 1930 Italy had only 1230 inhabitants.
At the 1960 census, Italy's population was 1183, its lowest level since 1910. The city is still agricultural. With an increase in maize production from 1975 onwards, Italy experienced an economic boom again. Since the 1980s, Italy has developed into a commuter community due to the steady expansion of the Dallas-Fort-Worth Metroplex , which in turn brought an increasing number of residents from the big cities with it. In 2000 Italy had 1993 inhabitants, since then the population has decreased slightly. On July 6, 2016, a Bell 525 helicopter crashed during a test flight near Italy, the two crew members were killed in the crash.

In 2018, Italy had 1,858 inhabitants, according to the American Community Survey . There were 648 households and 414 families in the city. Of the population, 77.9 percent were white, 9.3 percent were African American and 0.2 percent were Cherokee descendants . 10.4 percent were of other origins and 2.3 percent were of multiple origins. 29.4 percent of the population of Italy were Hispanic descent. 50.5 percent of the population were male and 49.5 percent female.
40.7 percent of households had children under the age of 18 living with them, and 32.1 percent of households had people over 60 years of age. In terms of age, the population of Italy was divided into 28.4 percent minors, 7.1 percent between 18 and 24, 30.2 percent between 25 and 44, 23.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.0 percent of the population were 65 years of age old or older. The median age was 33.6 years. In 2018, the median income in Italy per household was $ 46,429 and per family was $ 53,889. 7.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
education
Italy is the seat of the Italy Independent School District. The school district includes an elementary school from grades one to six and a high school. In the 2018/19 school year, a total of 602 students were taught at the two schools.
On January 22, 2018, there was a killing spree at Italy High School, in which a 15-year-old girl was injured.
