International Andrej Stenin photo competition

The International Andrej Stenin Competition is the annual competition for young photo reporters aged 18 to 33 inclusive. It was launched on December 22, 2014 by the Rossiya Segodnja news agency under the auspices of the Russian Commission on UNESCO Affairs. The competition is named after Andrei Stenin , the agency's picture correspondent, who died while performing his professional duties in southeastern Ukraine.

The aim of the competition is to promote young photographers and to draw public attention to the tasks of modern photojournalism. It is the only platform in Russia that supports young photographers. This will make their names internationally known.

In 2017, around 5,000 works from a record number of countries were sent to the competition, which is taking place for the third time in a row - 76. The winners' exhibition tour through numerous countries is already an indispensable part of the competition. In 2015 and 2016 the winning photos of the Andrej Stenin photo competition were exhibited in Cape Town , Istanbul , Tel Aviv , Cairo , Berlin , Shanghai , Budapest , Rome and other countries. The Andrej Stenin photo competition not only introduces new names to viewers from different countries, but also gives the best photojournalists in the world the opportunity to get new audiences and feedback. The 2017 exhibition was present in Athens , Madrid , Istanbul, Shanghai, Warsaw , Mexico , Johannesburg , Cape Town, Beirut and Budapest.

The sending of the recordings begins every year on December 22nd - Andrej Stenin's birthday.

Main criteria and categories

Photo reporters between the ages of 18 and 33 can register as participants in the competition. In each category, places one to three are awarded for individual photos and for photo series. In addition, individual photos can be awarded special prizes from the jury. One of the participants on the shortlist will receive the Grand Prix of the competition. The Grand Prix winner will be announced at the official award ceremony for the winners and laureates. In 2018 there are the following main categories:

  • "Top-News": The main subject of the recordings in this category are important events in the lives of individuals and countries as a whole - the most important political and social events, subjects from war zones and locations of natural disasters or decisive moments in people's lives.
  • "Sport": This category accepts photos that capture moments in sporting life - successful highlights from athletes and dramatic defeats, daily training, the beauty of sports competitions.
  • “My Planet”: The images in this category reflect the entire multicolored palette of themes and characters from all continents of the world. The author's task is to show the daily life kaleidoscope in its harmony and beauty, the subjects of everyday life, the rhythm of the metropolises and provincial cities, nature, ethnographic representations or religious celebrations.
  • "Portrait. Hero of our time “: The criteria for this category are individual or group portraits of people. The photos can be documentary or staged. Most important in this category is the ability of the author to open the heroes' inner world, to express their spiritual qualities and character through the peculiarity of the outside and the shape as a whole.

Others

The 2015 Grand Prix winner Jelena Anossowa was awarded the prize of the world's most famous photo competition World Press Photo in 2017 .

The golden winner of the 2015-2017 competitions in the sports category, Alexei Filippov, won the Istanbul Photo Awards in the international competition for news and sports photos.

The 2016 Grand Prix went to the Italian photographer Danilo Garcia Di Meo for a photo series about the paralyzed woman Leticia. The photo story charmed the jury, the heroine of the photo series made the first international trip in her life to Russia, where she told her story personally and was able to inspire many whose life is similar to her life

The 2016 winner in the Sports category, Vladimir Astapkovich, took first place in the annual International Photography Awards (IPA) photo competition.
