International Stefan Heym Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Stefan Heym Prize has been awarded since 2008 in memory of the German writer Stefan Heym (1913–2001), the son and honorary citizen of the city of Chemnitz .

Chemnitz presents the award, endowed with 20,000 euros, every three years to time-critical and courageous authors and publicists who, like Stefan Heym, have shown themselves to be personalities in their work and who interfere in social and political debates in order to fight for moral values. The award winners are elected by a board of trustees chaired by the mayor.

On the occasion of the 100th birthday of its honorary citizen Stefan Heym in April 2013, the city of Chemnitz deviated once from the three-year rhythm of the award ceremony and celebrated the anniversary with a week of festivities. A highlight was the awarding of the International Stefan Heym Prize to the German writer, translator and essayist Christoph Hein . According to Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig , he was honored with "a critical spirit and outstanding German writer whose literary work is characterized by astute observation and social commitment."
