The International hot dog eating contest is since 1916 every year on the American National Day (4th of July, Independence Day ) in Coney Iceland ( New York ), at Nathan's Famous , a traditional hot dog , held chain. The event is organized by the International Federation of Competitive Eating , (IOFCE). The winner is the one who can eat the most hot dogs within ten minutes - twelve minutes by 2007.

history

The competition is said to go back to four immigrants who wanted to clarify which of them was the greatest patriot over a sausage dinner at Nathan's on July 4, 1916. The winner was Joe Alger with thirteen sausages; another source cites James Mullen. Since then, the competition has been held here almost every year. Participants have to qualify for the final in several public preliminary dinners. In addition to a cash bonus, the winner will also receive the official world championship title, the “yellow mustard belt”. The event will be broadcast live on television to an audience of millions.

Since 1997 the trophy has been firmly in Japanese hands. Long-time champion was the Japanese Takeru Kobayashi , who defended his title six times. In 2007 the Americans celebrated in the 92nd competition Joey Chestnut , who with 66 against 63 hot dogs brought the title back to the USA after a decade and set a new world record. Kobayashi said he suffered from TMJ arthritis and a recently pulled wisdom tooth that year. Joey Chestnut was able to defend his title in 2008 and 2009 and increase the world record to 68 hot dogs (2009). In 2013 he was able to increase his own record to 69, in 2016 to 70, in 2018 to 74 and finally to 75 in 2020.

Also in 2020, the women's world record of 45 hot dogs (set by Sonya Thomas in 2013 ) was increased to 48.5. The new record holder is Miki Sudo .
