Intihuatana

As Intihuatana is known ritual stones of the former Empire Inca in South America.

It is believed that they were used to determine astronomical time. The name, which is derived from Quechua , the language of the Incas , means something like "place where the sun is tied up". The most famous intihuatana is in Machu Picchu . It casts no shadow around the spring and autumn equinox (for Peru around September 23 and March 21, respectively). Another well-known location of an intihuatana is in Písac . It is believed that other Intihuanas were destroyed by the Spanish conquerors of the Inca Empire.
