Iossif Efimovich Cheific

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Iossif Efimowitsch Cheific ( Russian Иосиф Ефимович Хейфиц ; born December 17, 1905 in Minsk , Russian Empire , today Belarus ; † April 24, 1995 in Saint Petersburg ) was a Soviet film director and screenwriter .

Live and act

Cheific studied at the Leningrad Technical School of Cinema and was then hired as a screenwriter by the Soviet production facility Sowkino . He made his debut as a film director during the silent film era and settled in Moscow . Until 1950, Cheific staged in collaboration with his colleague and former technical college classmate Alexander Sarchi and was often involved in the script of these productions. Both early works are strongly influenced by Stalinism and, especially during the Second World War, had strong nationalistic and propaganda elements. In 1945 the directing duo also made a documentary about Japan's defeat in the war .

Cheific's most artistically successful years began with the separation from Sarchi. “Above all, his two excellent adaptations of the Chekhov novels“ The Lady with the Dog ”and“ In the City of S. ”, implemented with a great sense of psychological penetration, empathy and attention to detail, earned him a certain reputation at home and internationally . “In addition, Cheific shot some notable contemporary pieces. There were several portraits of women that were largely free of socialist propaganda and were entirely devoted to tracing everyday occurrences and problems of people in the modern Soviet Union.
