Ipse dixit ( Latin for "He said it himself," Altgr. Autós epha ) is a phrase that refers to a person-related authority argument. According to Marcus Tullius Cicero , the students of Pythagoras of Samos should have relied on his own statements, since they were not allowed to question his teaching authority.

The saying is part of an eristic strategy . Accordingly, a party to the dispute does not necessarily have to be refuted within the truth, but can also be refuted within the constellation of statements that he has designated as true.
