The Irízar Island ( French Île Irízar , English Irízar Island ) is an island off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located around 1 km northeast of the Uruguay Island in the northeast section of the Argentine Islands of the Wilhelm Archipelago .
It was discovered by participants in the Fourth French Antarctic Expedition (1903–1905) under the direction of polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot . Charcot named the island after Julián Irízar (1869-1935), captain of the Argentine corvette Uruguay , which was used to rescue the stranded participants in the Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1901-1903). The island was surveyed in 1935 by the British Graham Land Expedition (1934–1937) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer John Rymill .
