The Uruguay Island ( French Île Uruguay , English Uruguay Island ) is an island off the Graham coast of Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula .
geography
The island is located between Irízar Island and Corner Island in the group of Argentine islands of the Wilhelm Archipelago . It has a prominent bay on the west side.
history
It was discovered by participants in the Fourth French Antarctic Expedition (1903–1905) under the direction of polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot . Charcot named the island after the Argentine corvette Uruguay , which was involved in rescuing the stranded participants in the Swedish Antarctic Expedition . The island was surveyed in 1935 by the British Graham Land Expedition (1934–1937) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer John Rymill .
