The French Passage is a sea route through the Wilhelm Archipelago off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula . In a north-west-south-east direction it leads past the Petermann Island , the Stray Islands , the Vedel Islands and the Myriad Islands in the north to the Argentine Islands , the Anagram Islands , the Roca Islands and the Cruls Islands in the south.
The nomination by participants in the British Graham Land Expedition (1934–1937) was in recognition of the performance of the Fifth French Antarctic Expedition (1908–1910) under the direction of the polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot , who sailed with the ship Pourquoi Pas? drove the passage for the first time.
