The Galíndez Island ( French Île Galíndez , English Galíndez Island ) is an island off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located immediately east of Winter Island in the group of Argentine islands of the Wilhelm Archipelago . 320 m northwest of Galíndez Island are The Buttons , two other small islands. Stella Creek separates it from Winter Island to the west, the Meek Channel to the north from Grotto Island and Corner Island and the Cornice Channel to the south from Skua Island .
It was discovered by participants in the Fourth French Antarctic Expedition (1903–1905) under the direction of polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot . Charcot named the island after Ismael F. Galíndez (1871-1918), head of the Argentine expedition to Laurie Island (1904-1905) to build the Orcadas station . The island was surveyed by the British Graham Land Expedition (1934-1937) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer John Rymill .
The Ukrainian Vernadsky Station is on the island .
