Winter Island is an island off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located 180 m north of Skua Island in the group of the Argentine Islands of the Wilhelm Archipelago .
The island was named during the British Graham Land Expedition (1934-1937) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer John Rymill , who built a winter base on this island in 1935, which gave it its name.
