Ira Coray Abbott
Ira Coray Abbott (born December 14, 1824 in Burns , Allegany County , New York , † October 9, 1908 in Washington, DC ) was an American Brevet - Brigadier General of the Army in the Civil War .
Life
Abbott, son of Edmond Austin Abbott and his wife Nancy Gregory Abbott, served during the Civil War, first as a Lieutenant Colonel (Lieutenant Colonel) and then as Colonel (Colonel) and Commander of the 1st Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment (1st Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment) , where he succeeded Colonel John C. Robinson . He was wounded in the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862 . During the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, his regiment was part of the 1st Brigade, commanded by Col. William S. Tilton , which fought the Confederate States Army on July 2, 1863 at Stony Hill, west of Wheatfield. He and his unit came under heavy fire, in which he was eventually seriously wounded and had to withdraw. For his "brave and commendable service during the war" he was awarded the Brevet - Brigadier General (Brigadier General) of the US volunteer troops on March 13, 1865 . His unit received a memorial in the Gettysburg National Military Park .
Abbott was married twice, the first marriage to Roxanna E. Brown Abbott, who died in 1852 at the age of 19. In his second marriage he was married to Electa Araminta Shear Abbott. After his death he was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. His younger brother Austin Leroy Abbott served as a lieutenant in the 12th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment , while his youngest brother Maro Angevine Abbott was a sergeant in the 7th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment .
