Iraqi Governing Council

The Iraqi Governing Council ( Arabic مجلس الحكم العراقي, DMG Maǧlis al-Ḥukm al-ʿIrāqī ) was a temporary political body after the Iraq war . He was installed on July 13, 2003 by the American civil administrator in Baghdad , Paul Bremer , and dissolved prematurely on June 1, 2004 by resolution of its members.

Since the assassination of Ezzedine Salim on May 17, 2004, the Sunni councilor Ghazi al-Yawar has chaired the government council .

The chair rotated monthly between nine council members.

The Iraqi ethnic groups and faiths were represented on the 25-member council as follows:

The first official act of this was to set April 9 , the day when Saddam Hussein was overthrown , the new national holiday .

The council was empowered to perform the following tasks:

  • Appoint and remove ministers,
  • formulate and direct Iraqi politics,
  • set the budget as well
  • to draw up a new constitution.

The US remained responsible for internal security .
