Irene Pepperberg

Irene Maxine Pepperberg (born April 1, 1949 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American scientist at Brandeis University in Waltham (Massachusetts) .

After finishing school, she studied chemistry and graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and in 1971 with a Master of Arts (MA) from Harvard University . In 1976 she received her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in chemical physics, also from Harvard University.

Her field of work is the basics of language and communication. Among other things, she investigates the differences in brain function between mammals and birds .

Irene Pepperberg's studies with the African Gray Parrot Alex regarded as a milestone in language research. Alex 's vocabulary and its purposeful use have led to a re-evaluation of the cognitive abilities of birds. Alex 's ability to recognize and use the meaning of words are considered by the researcher to be comparable to that of a two-year-old child.
