According to the tradition of the Catholic Church , Irene of Rome († around 288) was the widow of St. Castulus , who had suffered martyrdom. She is venerated as a saint in the Catholic and Orthodox Churches . Her feast day is January 22nd.

According to tradition, Irene found St. Sebastian , wounded by arrows by his pursuers , who had been hung to die from a tree, and nursed him well. Sebastian later suffered martyrdom in a different way.

In Christian iconography , St. Irene is depicted with the attributes of an olive branch and a bottle of ointment, caring for St. Sebastian. She is considered the patron saint of the sick.
