Irina Fedotowa-Fet ( Russian Ирина Федотова ; * 1979 in Moscow ) is a well-known Russian activist who was the first to fight against the regional propaganda law of the Russian Federation and was the first to record two successful judgments.

Private

The self-confessed homosexual woman grew up in Moscow and gained first notoriety through her marriage to Irina Schipitko, accompanied by activist and lawyer Nikolai Alexejew in Toronto, after she was denied marriage in her home country. Due to an unclear definition of the law, the couple hopes that their marriage will be legally recognized in Russia.

Life as an activist

The activist had lodged a complaint with the UN Human Rights Committee in Geneva against the regional law "Propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations towards minors" in the Ryazan region . The Human Rights Committee ruled that the Russian authorities had violated the right to freedom of expression and the prohibition of discrimination under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights . The restriction of freedom of expression by the law against "gay propaganda" was "not based on reasonable and objective criteria", according to the judgment (1932/2010) of the UN Human Rights Committee, which had to deal with the international treaty. Russia has not given reasonable grounds for a ban, nor has it banned heterosexual propaganda as well. GayRussia had previously brought the case to committee after several rulings in Russia confirmed the legality of the regional propaganda laws. For the first time since the regional law came into force, the Ryazan District Court overturned or amended the conviction based on the 1932/2010 judgment of the Human Rights Committee. There have been various debates in the literature and literature about whether the judgment can be seen as a precedent .

Recognition as a couple

Their recognition failed in Russia. The couple now want to go to the European Court of Human Rights .
