Irmela Florin

Irmela Florin (born April 14, 1938 in Dortmund ; † December 19, 1998 ) was a German psychologist and from 1978 until her death held the chair for clinical psychology at the Philipps University of Marburg . She was one of the leading co-founders of behavior therapy in Germany.

Services

After studying psychology in Munich (diploma in 1964), Irmela Florin trained in behavioral therapy at Temple University with Arnold A. Lazarus and at Kansas University with M. Wolf. After her return to Germany, she helped set up the Reichenau research group in Konstanz, received her doctorate in 1973 and took on a C3 position in Tübingen until she was appointed to Marburg. She worked on the development of therapy manuals for the treatment of behavioral disorders in children , for relaxation and desensitization (with G. Haag) as well as for performance disorders and test anxiety (with Lutz von Rosenstiel ) and most recently developed a manual for the treatment of bulimia nervosa with Brunna Tuschen-Caffier . She has published papers on various anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders, depression, alcoholism, stuttering, migraines, asthma, back surgery and infertility, among others.

Irmela Florin's goal was to promote clinical psychology in research and practice and to make effective behavioral therapy methods accessible to a broad group of patients; In this context, she helped set up the Christoph Dornier Foundation for Clinical Psychology.

Irmela Florin was head of the specialist group for clinical psychology of the German Society for Psychology and President of the German Society for Behavioral Medicine and Behavioral Modification (DGVM). The research award, which the DGVM awards every two years, is named after her.

Irmela Florin is always associated with the tireless promotion of young talent. A large number of the researchers at the “Professorenschmiede Marburg” emerged from their working group.

Awards

  • In 1997 she was the first female scientist in Marburg to be awarded the Women's Advancement Prize for her commitment to promoting young talent, especially with regard to women.
  • In 1998 she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class.
