Isaac the Pirate (French Isaac le pirate ) is a comic by the artist Christophe Blain , which was published in France from 1999 to 2005. It tells of the adventures of the painter Isaac, who unexpectedly made a trip to the Caribbean from Paris in the 18th century and had adventures there with pirates.

The young and not very successful painter Isaak Sofer lives with his lover Alice in Paris. Both are enthusiastic about stories about pirates and expeditions through which they collect books and pictures. Isaac wants to paint pictures of adventures himself and is collecting studies for this. When he met the wealthy Henri Demelin on the street, he was enthusiastic about his studies and invited him to meet a captain. But this soon turns out to be a trip to America, where Isaac is supposed to document the adventures of the pirate captain Jean. At first he reluctantly accepts his new role and is well received by the team with his knowledge of pirates from books. Finally Isaac is taken by the captain to the governor, where he meets the ladies at court. They like him too, they let him draw them and in the evening not only the captain but also Isaac pay a visit to one of the ladies. Then they want to go on a journey to discover a new world south of America that they have heard stories about.

Meanwhile Alice is waiting in Paris for Isaac to return. In the end, she has to move due to financial difficulties, but receives support from the dealer Philippe du Chemin Vert. He offers her a job as a domestic help, after all she can move in with him and work as a secretary. Both share a fascination for adventure and pirate stories and get closer.

Release history

The comic was released from 1999 to 2005 in five albums by Dargaud . From 2005 to 2007 the albums were published in German by Reprodukt . A Spanish translation was also published by Norma Editorial , a Dutch translation by Oog & Blik and a Polish translation by Egmont .

Awards

In 2002 Christophe Blain was awarded the Prix ​​du meilleur album at the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d'Angoulême for the first album in the series . In the same year Isaac received the award of the library association Canal BD .
