Isabel Patricia Montañez (born March 17, 1960 in Geneva , Switzerland ) is an American- Swiss geologist and paleoclimatologist . She is a professor at the University of California, Davis . Its h-index is 47 (as of January 2020).

Life

Montañez graduated from Bryn Mawr College with a bachelor's degree in geology in 1981 . She received her PhD from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1990 and taught at the University of California, Riverside from 1990 to 1998 , before moving to the University of California, Davis, where she has been a professor ever since. She was President of the Geological Society of America from 2017 to 2018 .

Montañez research focuses on the study of sedimentary deposits in paleo-oceans and their influence by biogeochemical factors, as well as the interactions of carbonate fluids and rocks in sedimentary basins using methods of stratigraphy , petrography and geochemistry .

Taking the long-period Milanković cycles (100,000 and 405,000 years) into account, she analyzed the strongly fluctuating carbon dioxide concentrations and climatic conditions for the last 16 million years of the Pennsylvania in the late Carboniferous and was thus able to show that climate changes not only affect vegetation, but vice versa vegetation also affects the climate, which amplifies the effects of climate change and in many cases makes them more unpredictable. In addition, she researched the transition from different warm climate periods to a cold period as well as the causes and consequences of oceanic anoxic events and biogeochemical changes in the seas during the Phanerozoic . Their results point to an underestimation of the future CO 2 content in the atmosphere. On this basis, she summarized her results as follows: “Most of our estimates of future carbon dioxide levels and future climate do not fully take into account the various feedbacks that affect forests. Therefore, current forecasts are likely to underestimate the extent of the carbon dioxide flow into the atmosphere. "

Montañez received the Laurence L. Sloss Award from the Geological Society of America in 2017 and the Jean Baptiste Lamarck Medal in 2019 from the European Geophysical Union Division of Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, and Paleontology .
