Cadet Corps

Students who want to pursue a military career can, in addition to their studies, receive training to become officers in the cadet corps . When a land-grant university was founded in 1872 as the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College , military training and membership of the cadet corps was mandatory. In 1923, the mandatory period in the cadet corps was reduced from four to two years. The students could then continue to attend the university as civilian students. Veterans after World War II did not have to join the corps. In 1964, admission to the corps became voluntary.

Today, membership in the Corps of Cadets and participation in the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) is no longer necessary. However, membership and participation in the ROTC is a prerequisite for receiving an officer's certificate (commission) upon graduation from the university . The cadets are not soldiers, do not belong to the US armed forces and are therefore not subject to military jurisdiction. However, they are required to wear uniform, live together in shelters and are subject to military drill and the rules of military discipline. Students who are striving for a military career must take part in the ROTC ( English Military Leader Track ) as a cadet and are subject to the obligation to later serve in the military. Alternatively, they receive additional training to become a civilian leader ( English Citizen-Leader Track ). More than 75% of the cadets strive for an officer license. As members of a Senior Military College , these graduates of the Cadet Corps are granted the right to serve as active officers in the US armed forces.

The Cadet Corps offers the ROTC programs of the US Army, US Air Force and US Navy, in which the leadership positions are filled by cadets of the senior years. A special feature is its own military music corps and a mounted unit.
