Isabel of Portugal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Isabel of Portugal (* 1432 in Coimbra , † December 2, 1455 in Évora ) was Queen of Portugal from 1447 until her death .

Queen Isabel of Portugal

Isabel was born to the Duke of Coimbra , Peter of Portugal and Isabel of Aragon , Countess of Urgell , a daughter of King James II of Aragon.

She married King Alfonso V of Portugal in 1447 and was appointed queen through the marriage (as a wife, not as regent in her own right). Reports of inbreeding could not be proven. Isabel died surprisingly eight months after giving birth to her last child at the age of 23. She was buried in the monastery of Batalha .

Isabel had three children, including King John II of Portugal and the beatified Joan of Portugal .
