Isabella of Armenia (Princess)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Princess Isabella of Armenia († around 1321 ) was the daughter of Leon III. of Armenia and sister of King Hethum II. The Armenian form of her name is Զաբէլ (in Reformed spelling Զաբել; in scientific transliteration Zabel or Zabēl). The Western Armenian pronunciation is [zapʰɛl], the Eastern Armenian [zabɛl] (notated in the international phonetic alphabet ).

She was married to Prince Amalrich of Cyprus , titular Prince of Tire, from 1293 , who became regent of Cyprus from 1306. She had six children with him:

  • Hugo
  • Heinrich († around 1321)
  • Guido († 1344), King of Armenia 1342–1344
  • Johann († 1343)
  • Bohemond († 1344)
  • Maria, who married her cousin King Leon IV of Armenia (1289–1307)

Amalrich was murdered in 1310, after which Isabella fled to Armenia with her children.

At an unspecified time between 1320 and 1323, Isabella and her son Heinrich were imprisoned and murdered by Oschin von Korykos because he, regent of Leon V of Armenia , wanted to reduce the number of heirs to the throne.
