The Ishak Bey Türbe

The Ishak-Bey-Türbe ( Macedonian Турбе на Исхак-бег , Turkish İshak Bey Türbesi ) is an Ottoman tomb ( Türbe ) in the Macedonian capital Skopje . It is located on a hill in the old town, near the clock tower and the Sultan Murad Mosque . The Türbe was named after the second Ottoman mayor of the city Ishak Bey , who died in 1444 and whose sarcophagus occupies a central place within the Türbe.

history

The Türbe was probably built as his burial place in the mid-15th century by a bequest from the second Ottoman mayor of Skopje, Ishak-Bey. In his legacy, he also ordered the construction of the Ishak Bey Mosque in the area . The building was severely damaged several times in the earthquakes of 1555 and 1963 and in the fire of 1689. The building got its current appearance after its restoration in 2014. Only the remains of the construction with the sarcophagus of Ishak-Bey survived from the original Türbe.

architecture

The building type of the cult object is one of the examples of Islamic architecture . The original structure was built on a hexagonal base from solidly worked out Schroppen. It is not known whether the original Türbe was of the open or closed type. Nonetheless, it is open today.
