The Sultan Murad Mosque ( Albanian  Xhamia e Sulltan Muratit , Macedonian Султан-муратова џамија ) is a mosque founded by Sultan Murad II in the north Macedonian capital Skopje . It is located together with the Ishak-Bey-Türbe on an elevation in the old town and is one of the first mosques in the city on the Vardar .

Structure and equipment

The Sultan Murad Mosque was built in 1436 and is one of the oldest preserved in Macedonia to this day. In their time, next to the Islamic house of worship , there was also a madrasa and an İmaret , which were among the most famous in Skopje. Today, only a few ruins of the madrasa and the former cemetery, in which there are also two doorways : the doorway of Sultan Beyhan and the mausoleum of the family of Ali Pasha Dagestan, stand around this ensemble of buildings . In the northern part of the mosque property there is also the Skopje clock tower , which is a fundamental part of the mosque complex.

Entrance of the Sultan Murad Mosque

The main building has a 36 by 27 meter floor plan and is equipped with a portico to the north supported by five columns connected by round arches. At the northwest corner is the minaret , which has a total of 114 steps inside (number of suras in the Koran ). The entire building, which is covered by a hipped roof , is almost entirely made of stone, with the exception of a few wooden elements that can be found in the interior. The two doors are also connected to the south and south-east. There is also a small green area in front of the portico.

history

The mosque was built in 1436 by an architect named Husein from Debar . Although the building complex survived the severe earthquake of 1515, it was damaged several times by fire, for example in 1537 and 1689 as part of the Great Turkish War (1683 to 1699), when Austrian troops under General Giovanni Norberto Piccolomini captured the city on October 25, 1689 burned down on October 26th and 27th, severely damaging the mosque. With the help of Sultan Ahmed III. the fire damage was repaired in 1711 and the minaret rebuilt. In 1793 there was another fire, the consequences of which were only eliminated by the renovation in 1802. The mosque was badly damaged by the severe earthquake on July 26, 1963 and was not restored until 1982. Today the mosque is again accessible as a place of worship.
