Ishiyama-dera ( Japanese 石 山寺 ) is a Buddhist temple in the city of Ōtsu . It is one of the 33 temples on the Saigoku Pilgrimage Route .

overview

The temple was built around the year 762 by the priest Rōben . At first the temple belonged to the Kegon direction of Tōdai-ji , then changed to Shingon in the middle Heian period and enjoyed great veneration of the imperial family and the court nobility. The lady-in-waiting Murasaki Shikibu is said to have written the novel there in a hermitage around the year 1000, which went down in literary history as Genji Monogatari .

The temple district closes a slope with strikingly shaped rocks made of wollastonite (Japanese keikaiseki ), a calcium silicate that is a national natural monument under the law on the protection of cultural assets . This is in turn reflected in the name "Felsberg Temple". The temple stands on a slope on a wooden frame, similar to the Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto, although not that big. The current building ( national treasure ) was donated in 1602 by Yodogimi , Toyotomi Hideyori's mother . The Nyoirin- Kannon ( 如意輪 観 音 ) is venerated .

The pagoda on the hill above in the Tahōtō style ( national treasure ) dates from the Kamakura period ; it was donated by Minamoto no Yoritomo . The Ishiyamadera engi ( 石 山寺 縁 起 ; 7 scrolls), a report on the history of building and worship of the temple , also dates from the Kamakura period .

The Tsukimi- Tei pavilion ( 月 見 亭 , "moon view pavilion") is located on the hill with a view of Lake Biwa . The view from there of the autumn moon over Lake Biwa has entered into art as one of the eight views of Lake Biwa , although the temple is not on the lake, but on the Setagawa , the outflow of the lake, which is later called Ujigawa.
