Famous areas of more than 60 provinces

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Famous areas of the more than 60 provinces ( Japanese 六十 余 州名 所 図 会 , Rokujūyoshū meisho zue ) are titled the sheets of a color woodcut series by Utagawa Hiroshige from the years 1853-55, each of which depicts an area in the then 68 provinces of Japan .

To the leaves

  • The complete edition has a slightly different title on the cover: ( 大 日本 六十 余 州 名勝 図 会 , Dai-Nihon rokujūyoshū meishō zue , "Famous areas of the more than 60 provinces of Greater Japan"). The leaves are arranged according to the Gokishichidō :
    • Kinki: sheet 1–5
    • Tōkaidō: sheet 6–21
    • Hokurikudō: sheet 22-29
    • Tōsandō: sheet 30-36
    • San'indō: sheet 37-44
    • San'yōdō: sheet 45-52
    • Nankaidō: sheet 53-58
    • Saikaidō: sheets 59-69
  • In addition to the 68 provinces of the country, Hiroshige has dedicated a separate sheet (17) to the capital Edo, which belongs to the Musashi province.
  • Sheet 55 with the Naruto vortex has become particularly well known. There is evidence that Hiroshige was there, which cannot be said of all the provinces.
  • The series (like other series) was re-edited in the 20th century. Sheets without signs of age or use are likely to be copies of - very precise - recuts.
