The Uppu-Aru Lagoon ( Tamil : உப்பு ஆறு Uppu Āṟu [ ˈupːɯ ˈaːrɯ ] "Salt River") is a lagoon on the Jaffna Peninsula in the northern province of Sri Lanka .

The Uppu-Aru Lagoon is located in the interior of the Jaffna Peninsula. It separates the Valikamam region in the west from the Thenmarachchi region in the east. In the south there is a connection to the Jaffna lagoon , in the north one to the Vadamarachchi lagoon . The area of ​​the Uppu-Aru lagoon is around 30 square kilometers. It is divided into two parts by a road embankment. The water is brackish and reaches a maximum depth of three meters. There are extensive mudflats and salt marshes , the lagoon is lined with mangroves .

The Uppu-Aru lagoon provides habitat for numerous water birds, including the greater flamingo . Other bird species that can be seen in winter are the teal , pintail , shoveler , teal and black godwit .
