Ishizaka Teruko

Ishizaka Teruko , called Terry ( Japanese 石 坂 照 子 ; * September 28, 1926 - June 4, 2019 ), was a Japanese immunologist . In 1966 she and her husband Ishizaka Kimishige discovered the immunoglobulin E antibodies, which are of particular importance in allergies .

Ishizaka graduated from the Tokyo College of Gynecology with a doctorate in medicine in 1949 . In 1955 she received her doctorate from the University of Tokyo . From 1951 to 1957 she did research in the Serology Department of the National Health Research Center in Japan. 1957 to 1959 she was at Caltech and 1959 at Johns Hopkins University . 1962 to 1970 she was at the Asthma Research Institute and Hospital of the University of Colorado Medical School in Denver and from 1970 associate professor and later professor at Johns Hopkins University (first for microbiology and later for medicine and immunology).

She did research on allergies and immediate hypersensitivity.

In 1973 she and her husband received the Gairdner Foundation International Award and in 1972 the Passano Award . In honor of the Ishizaka couple, Allergy Day was introduced in 1995 to commemorate their research achievements and to raise awareness about allergies.
